UNTITLED (BATHROOM 101), installation for Bridge Art Fair at the Trafalgar Hotel, 2007

Projector playing video loop, mirror, bath of water
Model: Camilla Smith

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I am interested in relationships between the projected image and the surface, space or material onto which or into which it is projected. I like to observe the transformations that a fragile beam of light can affect, the way projections can change the feeling, sense of place or perceived dimensions of a space.

In Bathroom 101, animated photographs of a girl, shot from above, are reflected in a bath of water. The higher the water level, the more distant the image of the girl appears, as if we were looking down into a well. The movements she makes are tiny, barely discernible- she blinks, she tilts her head and adjusts her position. Deep in the water, she is deep in thought. Occasional drips from the tap disrupt the delicate image, and as the water comes to rest the ghostly image appears again.
