UPCOMING My 2006 film fragments will be presented in the forthcoming exhibition The Mirror Stage at the Lanitis Foundation in Cyprus this September. The exhibition is programmed by NeMe.
UPCOMING Bathysphere (installation version) will be included in the forthcoming exhibition 1% WATER in Z33, Hasselt, Belgium from 28 June to 28 September.
CONCEPT-TEXT / "1% water and our future will be an exploration of our relation to water, the ideas that are shaping current change and how this is being translated into experimental environments, designs and concepts that are shaping a new water consciousness.
Although 70% of the planet's surface is water, the title 1% refers to the amount of water that is available for human consumption. Factors such as the world's rapidly growing population and increasing consumption, our dramatic increase in use to produce the food and products we consume, climate change and industrial pollution, mean that even this limited and unevenly distributed resource is under threat. Water has become a political issue. The World Bank predicts, "If the wars of the twentieth century were fought over oil, the wars of this century will be fought over water.'
It goes without saying that water feeds our ecosystem, flowing through our bodies, buildings and our planet. It plays an important role in religion, spirituality and mythology. And yet while water is both essential to existence and a portal to our dreams, we have a dangerously perverse attitude to earth's diminishing aquatic resources. The personal bond that once connected humans with the source of life has been broken. In the past 150 years, water has become invisible since the advent of mains water supplies and modern sanitation systems. We may have gained the convenience of water on tap but at the same time we have drained it of meaning and cultural significance. It is now the odorless, colorless, meaningless stuff called H20.
The exhibition explores themes such as (Ab)use, Sacred Waters and Reconnect through works by artists such as Lucy Orta, Amy Jenkins and Elina Brotherus, designers such as Fulguro, Doshi Levien, &made and Karlssonwilker, as well as key historic pieces. 1% aims to be a catalyst for change, reconnecting us physically and psychologically to water and helping to shape a sustainable hydrological future." / Z33
